sneaky time

Lovely remix of the consistently lush Sneaky Sound System. Plastic Plates builds this one beautifully, and you won’t want it to end. Let’s be friends.

slow burners

martin brodin says he’s been a lifelong fan of disco, even though he only made the switch from making deep house tracks in 2010. we’re glad he did, since it led to him releasing this slow burner  that recently cropped up on Worst Friends’ Beats in Space mix. if you hadn’t heard it already, pretty soon it’s going to be everywhere as Andrew Weatherall is including a Diskjokke remix of it on his much-anticipated Masterpiece mix, out later this month.

and if you like your build ups slow, and your disco edits delivered in the typical 2/3 build up 1/3 lyrics style, you’ll probably enjoy this. there’s nothing like a bit of anticipation to build up euphoria, and it has one incredibly soulful drop, thanks to the Lopez sisters.

old disco + new dubstep

When I first heard this track in a mixtape, I assumed the sharp breaks between piano stabs and slap bassline were the work of the DJ – the sort of almost-sloppy but blatant mixing that makes some of Rub N Tug‘s sets sound so great live whilst giving you a nostalgic hangover when you listen back at home. It turns out this cut by Fonda Rae was made that way. The piano sounds like it was ripped straight out of a Nineties house track, too. Sure, things get very soulful and a little bit gospel later on, so it’s not exactly a banger, but if you’re in a Larry Levan kind of place, it’ll go down a storm.

Meanwhile if that’s left you with a too-sweet early Eighties feel in your mouth, clear your palate with this brooding thumper from Kuedo (aka Jamie Teasdale, formerly one half of the cult dubstep outfit Vex’d). Though Skrillex would have you believe otherwise, big bass can be subtle.

i need a dollar, you need a remix

it’s always a pleasure when someone comes along and takes a great but totally unavoidable song and transforms it into something else. don’t get us wrong, we love aloe blacc’s original “i need a dollar”, and it’s pretty darn exciting that the ever-brilliant stones throw has managed to accidentally crash land right into the middle of the mainstream. nevertheless, if you’re starting to feel like you’ve heard it too many times, tensnake‘s deep house monster could be just the medicine. hands in the air time.
